Go to see the gaudiness of the inside, but don't go for the overpriced angel food cake. It's probably made from box mix, so not worth $7.95 per slice even if it is a huge slice. Make sure to go into the event area next door and downstairs to the wine cellar. The men's bathroom there is crazy and has a waterfall urinal area! Also go if you like the color pink!

Mediocre food. I feel like you're paying more for the experience than the food itself. Still yummy. Ordered both the Black Forest and pink champagne cakes. They are moist, soft and not overly sweet. Not the best but still quite yummy. My hubby and I both had sandwiches. Nothing out of this world.

Really more like a 3.5. Had a pleasant lunch there with family when I passed through town recently. We stood waiting to get seated for several minutes, being ignored. I eventually flagged someone down and we were sat quickly. This was forgiven after experiencing our very attentive server. The ambiance is awesome, and totally lives up to the hype. I left like I was in a 1920's parlor with a thick slab of Disneyland on top. Food was basic, but solid and good. I had a tuna melt with french fries and it was... tasty. As was my coffee. Family members had a prime rib sandwich, a burger of some kind, and a turkey sandwich. Everyone was pleased with their order and complemented it. At the end, we shared a piece of beautiful chocolate cake. For me, the taste didn't quite live up to the aesthetics but my table outvoted me, assuring me it was delicious. Good experience overall. Will be back.

I came here with a group of people who had been talking about the pink champagne cake for months. Like, they wouldn't shut up about it. The Inn and cafe are both really cool, kitschy, old-timey. It was a pleasant atmosphere. We were just there for cake and drinks. I didn't actually get a drink, because they were SO expensive (like pretty much everything else on the menu.) I got a piece of the (expensive) pink champagne cake and it was...pretty much the biggest let-down of my life. It was overly sweet, and the cake itself was no better than something you'd make from a mix. I guess what you're really paying for here is the experience, and the waitstaff were all really super nice, but I wouldn't go back for food, even if someone else were paying.

So glad we stopped. Made a reservation and glad we did. This is a popular place! Great atmosphere, super friendly staff, HUGE portions. Apparently the owners built the 101 Freeway. Who knew? Coffee is nice and bold. Very attentive staff and fast service. Hubby had eggs Benedict and they were on point. I had half a tuna sandwich in a home made roll and a cup of spinach soup. Also on point. For desert we decided on the fresh strawberry cake. Fresh is an understatement. It was hands down the best cake I have ever had. Not too sweet. So large we shared a slice. This place is definitely a must see when passing by.

Just visited the Madonna Inn last weekend and WOW the Cooper Cafe has really shaped up! We ate their twice over the weekend and found the staff fast, happy and the food was swiftly delivered to our table warm and ready to be consumed! As for the hotel... We were all disappointed by the change to white bedspreads. We realize this probably is for sanitary reasons but those shams on the beds are a SHAME! I hope they switch those out for themed ones that match the rooms!

A friend and I were driving through San Luis Obispo on our road trip back to Los Angeles from San Francisco, and we stopped at the Copper Cafe for lunch. While the Madonna Inn isn't necessarily the kind of place I'd normally stop for, the novelty and history of the place made it impossible to pass up. The Copper Cafe itself certainly adds whimsy of its own to the inn. In all reality, coming here is an experience - and one that certainly exceeded my own expectations. The service from start to finish was enjoyable, and the portions were pretty gigantic for all the food. I ordered the barbecued beef sandwich for lunch, which was delicious. For dessert? The pink champagne cake. Talk about adding whimsy... the pink champagne cake was, for $6.95, a massive slice of confectionery delight. Granted, it's pretty sweet... and I don't have much of a sweet tooth... but again, this was about the experience. The pink champagne cake seemed like just the right way to top everything off. The prices seem fitting for the portion sizes, and the service here is pretty delightful. In you don't mind being surrounded by pink, well, everything? Check out the Madonna Inn Copper Cafe and enjoy the ambience. Once you're actually there in it? It's hard to resist the charming nature of it all. Overall? 7/10. Would be back with friends, especially if looking for something niche with that added retro feel.

If you're going for a little better than Denny's you've come to the right place. The stars reflect the food (the service was great).

It's okay. I mainly came into the Madonna Inn to smash some pennies (very affordable souvenirs), but I also wanted the bf's reaction to the place. He had only heard snippets about Madonna Inn, and didn't realize to the full extent of what Madonna Inn is like. We were already pretty hungry, and I knew they had the cafe, so we walked in and was immediately seated. Our server was VERY sweet and adorable. She realized we were first-timers, so she gave us some tidbits about the place and where to visit. Very friendly, and gave great advice. Our waters were always promptly filled, and we were able to order pretty quickly. I ordered the egg salad sandwich with a side of potato salad, while the bf ordered one of their...steaks? Egg salad sandwich was pretty bland, where it only consisted of bread, lettuce, and egg salad. Nothing spectacular to it at all, but putting some pepper helped. The bread was a bit stale, but they may have made my sandwich first before they started cooking the bf's food. Potato salad had a bit more flavor to it, but wasn't that great, either. I probably had better store-bought potato salad than what I had from the cafe. The only good thing was that there was a LOT of egg salad on it. But, it still wasn't very good egg salad. :/ Bf's steak wasn't that great, either. Not the best quality, and was cooked a little more than he requested. Had their black forest chocolate cake. Decadent, but edible. HUGE slice, so you'd want to share! So, it's a very cute cafe with a 60's feel, and the service was excellent, but the food isn't up to par.

Always a great experience but today was exceptional. Sat at the bar with my dad, and our server was Thomas. Excellent customer service, will definitely be back!! And the food... So food!!!

We stopped in after checking out of the Madonna Inn. I was underwhelmed. We had a late breakfast around 11 and service was slow. Food was mediocre. I wish we had gone to a quaint brunch or lunch spot in SLO instead. I wouldn't return here since it just didn't offer flair like the Gold Rush.

We recently stayed at the Madonna Inn, as we do when we visit family on the Central Coast every year. And, as is our tradition, we went to dinner with family at the Copper Cafe. In the past, it has always been a pleasant experience, and we looked forward to the same this year. Unfortunately, the service we received was downright awful. Several among our party are either servers currently, or worked our way through college as servers, so we are not unfamiliar with the challenges of serving a larger party that includes children, and have reasonable expectations in that regard. However, the reasons our visit was so awful this time around should have been the easiest things to get right. To begin with, we were seated for more than half an hour before receiving our drinks (we had to flag down a bus boy in order to get someone to come over and take our order, and then ask multiple times to actually get our drinks, although our drink order was not complicated). The two people in our party who ordered cocktails ordered them before we ordered our food, and did not receive them until we already had dessert on the table (some 45 minutes later) - and again, had to ask several times where our drinks were. Most of the time, we couldn't find our waiter at all, and had to actually get up and go find someone to help us. With our drinks, it turned out that the bus boy had poured the drinks and they were all sitting over at the drink station - we knew this because the waiter yelled at the bus boy about it in our presence. The restaurant was not particularly busy when we were there (there were several open tables), so it was hard to imagine a reason for the poor service other than that our waiter was irritated by our mere presence and did not want to serve us. The food, when it came out, was pretty good. Toward the end of dinner, our waiter disappeared entirely, so we took it upon ourselves to go get our own refills on drinks. Nobody seemed to notice or care. There was never any acknowledgement or apology for the terrible service, despite the fact that several people from our party had to get up from the table multiple times in order to get basic things that we needed (water, drinks, silverware) by ourselves. I've never actually had an experience where the service was that terrible, and either the server didn't apologize, or the manager didn't come over and try to make it right somehow. But, none of that happened. It was like this was just business as usual for the Copper Cafe - which I know in the past wasn't true, at least! When we checked out of the Madonna Inn the following day, my husband mentioned our disappointment with our experience at the Copper Cafe and explained why. The front desk staff indicated that a manager would call us back to discuss it with us. We waited more than a week and hadn't heard back, so we sent an e-mail to follow up. Still no response. We don't expect perfection, but you know, when you screw up that badly, just saying "Sorry you had a bad experience" can go a long way. They wouldn't even acknowledge that we had an awful experience, let alone express any regret over it. That will be the last time we book a suite at the Madonna Inn, or dine there. Truly unfortunate, as we had always enjoyed staying there and eating there in the past.

Breakfast after a night at the Madonna Inn. The Copper Cafe continues the kitch that defines the Madonna. It's a 50's coffee shop/diner on steroids. Everything's copper. Wait staff dressed in dirndls. Very alpine. Food was decent.

A friend and I stopped here on our way to Hearst Castle. We were told my multiple people that it's a 'must-see' and I can definitely see why. The cafe (and I'm sure the actual rooms in the inn) had very ostentatious, medieval style decor. Everything from the pink glasses, napkins, and menus to the carpeting and curtains. My friend and I split two sandwiches. Beef BBQ: the beef was thinly sliced and very tender, albeit salty. I personally like salty food, so it was fine with me, but my friend pointed it out. Luckily, some extra BBQ sauce fixed it right up. Hot sliced roast turkey: now THIS was the standout sandwich. More like an open faced turkey sandwich, it was topped with mashed potatoes and came with a side of gravy and cranberry sauce. It was Thanksgiving on a plate and it was perfect. Order it! Yes the cafe is a tad on the pricier side for sandwiches, but you're definitely paying for the experience. Great service and friendly staff included! We were sad that we were too full to eat dessert, but there's always next time.

LOVE everything about this place. The bakery has the best cake I've ever had in my life and the breakfast is always yummy! I love sitting by the pink stool bar. It has such an old time glamour feel.. It makes me giddy. I feel like Frank Sinatra is gonna walk up any minute and order a coffee. Service is always cheerful and welcoming. My BFs fave breakfast is the Veggie Frittata and I like getting traditional bacon eggs and hash browns. It's such a great looking cafe and being there puts me in a good mood. I definitely recommend breakfast AND the bakery. The cakes are out of this world awesome!

Okay , so this review is based on customer service . I ordered a cake the morning of because it was my aunts birthday . Long story short I called and asked if I could buy a cake ( they have a bunch on display) Frankie was very nice and said I could choose between 3 cakes m I chose the pink Champaign . Got there about an hour later and told the bakery women frankie put a cake on hold " she then said we can't sell you ant cakes they are reserved or we need them to sell to the restaurant" I told her I reserved it and she had a nasty attitude.. her name was AMY. idk how she managed to get a job here . She has the worst attiude/ customer service I've ever seen . She had a terrible attiude. I asked if they could write happy birthday on the cake and another girl nodded her head and Amy said NO. We need 24 hours in advance. Ridiculous ... she should be fired . They had a good 50 cakes sitting their waiting to be sold . Once I said I just called frankie saved it for me she pulled out a cake . ??? You couldn't. Just do that ? Any way won't be back cakes are average tasting but service sucks ! Our server a brown girl with curly hair was very attentive and nice. she should take Amy's job !!

The foods was ok, nothing to rave about actually boring. You are better just going here for the atmosphere and not the food, I can't say I will never eat here again but on second thought yes I can!

Well, we made the mistake of 1) not checking the price of the shrimp Louis. and 2) ordering it, and 3) not sending them back to the kitchen. The shrimp were plentiful, sliced down the middle, but badly undercooked (still translucent), and tasteless. The salad itself was huge. But nothing outstanding. I complained to the waitress (excellent service) who went to the cooks with the suggestion: cook one or two minutes longer, in some Old Bay seasoning or its like. I could see them chuckling during her conversation. I ate the olives and a little bit of limp greens, and left the rest. I should have sent it back, but though it would be more effective to tell them more specifically what was wrong. The cost: $24.95 per salad!!!!! Usually a salad of that type is around $15.00. The overhead can't be so much that they need to overcharge. All of the copper trappings are quite vintage, and they carry on a pretty busy business. To make s long story short, will check the menu price, and order a sandwich if and when we return.
